The game where you dig a hole is back, and now your mates can stand around in the hole with you. A Game About Digging A Hole Together got a release date at the ID@Xbox showcase: 4 December 2026, on Xbox Series X|S and PC, and on Game Pass from day one.
If you missed the original, it really was just a game about digging a hole. You dig down from a beach, sell the rocks and ore you find, upgrade your shovel and keep going deeper. One developer made it in a few weeks. It went viral and sold more than a million copies. Sometimes the simple idea wins.
A Game About Digging A Hole came out on Steam on 7 February 2025 from DoubleBee. It still sits at “Very Positive” from more than 20,000 reviews, with about 89% recommending it. That’s a lot of love for something you can finish in an afternoon. It went viral on social media, broke into Steam’s top 30 and, according to the publishers, sold over a million copies on PC before it came to consoles.
We’ll be honest: “the hole game, but with friends” sounds like a joke, and it might be the best co-op idea of the year. The original was a satisfying loop in a tiny package: dig, sell, upgrade, dig deeper. Throw four people into the same pit and there’ll be arguments about who gets to use the drill, and someone digging straight under their mate. That’s half the fun.
It’s also the first game made for GetRekt’s Wardogs Blue Team. Nobody on the planet has more experience digging themselves into a hole. They walked into Lonestar on purpose, won about 10% of their matches, and got bribed to stay before the bribe was taken off them within a day. A game where going lower counts as progress is the closest thing to a win they’ve had all year. Squad leader, put your hand up for the drill. Actually, no. Give it to someone else.
The risk is the usual one when a tiny viral game gets a sequel with a bigger team: it gets padded out with upgrade trees and grindy bits until it loses what made it work. Being on Game Pass from day one means there’s no risk for Xbox and PC players. Everyone else should wait for the price and some reviews. If it stays around the original’s price, it’s an easy call for a Friday night with the squad.
Are you digging with a squad on 4 December? Blue Team, you’re already down there, so save us a spot. Tell us in the comments, or go and find three mates with shovels in the GetRekt Discord.
