The Take-Two/Microsoft deal is a standard Xbox publishing licence renewal

If you saw the headlines this week saying PC players would get GTA 6 on day one by streaming it through Xbox, hold off on cancelling your PS5 pre-order. Xbox has shot it down.

What was reported

On 6 October, The Verge reported that Xbox had secured exclusive cloud streaming rights to Grand Theft Auto VI. According to the report, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma told staff the game would stream exclusively through Xbox Cloud Gaming at launch, in a deal no other platform holder had. That would have meant PC players could stream GTA 6 from 19 November instead of waiting for a native PC version.

What Xbox actually said

A day later, Xbox Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball posted on X to correct the record. He said the excitement had led to some misreporting, and that the game “will not be streaming exclusively or to PC”. Xbox is still launching GTA 6 on Xbox Series X|S on 19 November. The Verge has since updated its story.

What Ball didn’t rule out is GTA 6 showing up on Xbox Cloud Gaming in some form, such as streaming to Xbox consoles. Nothing has been confirmed either way.

So what is the Microsoft deal?

The only confirmed agreement is a long-term Xbox Publisher License Agreement between Take-Two and Microsoft, effective 17 September and disclosed in a Take-Two filing in late September. It’s a renewal of the standard licence publishers need to release games on Xbox, not a GTA 6-specific deal. If anyone has a GTA 6 marketing partnership, it’s Sony: the campaign has been PlayStation-first all year.

The real facts on PC

  • GTA 6 launches 19 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only.
  • Rockstar hasn’t announced a PC version, a date or even a window. Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick has said PC is increasingly important to the company, but that’s as far as it goes.
  • No streaming route to PC at launch, according to Xbox.
  • History says wait. GTA V hit consoles in September 2013 and PC in April 2015. Red Dead Redemption 2 launched on console in October 2018 and reached PC in November 2019. A PC version a year or more after launch would fit Rockstar’s track record, but that’s a pattern, not a promise.

Our take

A day-one PC route for GTA 6 would have been massive news, which is exactly why it spread so fast. For now, PC players are in the same spot they’ve always been with Rockstar: wait for the console launch, then wait some more. If you’re PC-only and keen to play with the crew in November, a console might be the way. We’ll update this if Rockstar or Xbox announce anything new.
