Mass Effect: Universe Would Have Remembered Every Choice You Ever Made, Says Its Tech Director

BioWare's Mass Effect technical director went on Twitch and explained how the cancelled Mass Effect: Universe would have stitched every trilogy choice into its own timeline system. EA binned it anyway.

Mass Effect: Universe Would Have Remembered Every Choice You Ever Made, Says Its Tech Director
TL;DR
>>

Ex-BioWare franchise technical director Romain Toutain says Mass Effect: Universe took every choice from the original trilogy into account.

>>

Players could combine saves into alternate timelines, backed by a "stateful" logic solver that patched or failed missions around your decisions.

>>

He also confirmed a custom lead, real melee combat, relay-repair lore, and that the leaked trailer was internal-only. The creature was called "Billy".

>>

All quotes come from one fan-subtitled clip of a French Twitch stream that is no longer archived. EA hasn't commented.

>>

Other claims (600 years after ME3, a galactic Cold War, Hitman-style missions) come from a YouTuber and remain unverified.

Just when you thought the Mass Effect grief couldn’t get worse, the guy who built the tech for the cancelled game went on Twitch and explained exactly how ambitious it was. According to Romain Toutain, BioWare’s Mass Effect franchise technical director, Mass Effect: Universe would have taken every choice from the original trilogy into account, and let you spin up whole alternate timelines out of them.

It’s the latest in a week-long drip of details since EA closed BioWare on 21 October and the game’s internal trailer leaked a day later.

What the tech director said

Toutain, who streams as Octobinz, watched the leaked trailer live on Twitch on 24 October and talked through it in French. A fan on Bluesky (@loustica-lucia), whose brother was watching, posted a clip with English subtitles, and Kotaku and IGN picked it up. Going by that translation:

All the choices made in the first Mass Effect games were taken into account. One of the reasons why it was called Mass Effect: Universe is that you had so many choices that you could plug your saves together to create parallel universes. To keep it simple. It’s not exactly how it worked. You had different timelines, basically.

Romain Toutain, via fan translation
  • Generate your own timelines: he compared it to Spike Chunsoft’s Zero Time Dilemma. Asked whether it was like the Dragon Age Keep, he said “kinda”, but you could also make decisions that contradict what you’d already done, creating new branch points in the timeline.
  • A logic solver under the hood: “Everything was stateful.” At any point the game could ask a system whether the current state was valid and, if not, what had to change. Kill someone you needed for a mission, and the game would either find another way through or fail the mission, depending on what the designers wanted. He says it “worked in practice”.
  • Custom protagonist: the lead would have been customisable. He didn’t give a name.
  • The relays: he teased “incredible” lore explaining how the Mass Relays were repaired after Mass Effect 3 blew them up.
  • Melee was real: the punch-ups in the trailer weren’t just cinematic. You’d swap between guns and fists on the fly.
  • The trailer was never meant for you: it was an internal mood piece for the studio, which is why it’s scored with “Quartz” by French 79 instead of BioWare music.
  • Meet Billy: the squid-like creature fans pegged as an organic Reaper had the asset name “Billy”.

And his read on the #SaveMassEffect push? He doesn’t think EA will sell, because “EA never actually sells anything”, it just shuts things down and sits on the licences. His other line about the game: “You have no f**king idea just how great it was.”

Who is Romain Toutain?

Not some random on Reddit. Toutain’s LinkedIn and X bio list him as Mass Effect franchise technical director at BioWare. Before that, he was a technical director at Supermassive Games (The Dark Pictures) and at Square Enix Europe (Life Is Strange, Just Cause 4, Outriders), and he spent years as a graphics programmer at Splash Damage and Arkane, where he worked on Dishonored.

The caveats

  • One translation: every quote doing the rounds comes from a single fan-subtitled clip. We haven’t heard the full stream.
  • The VOD is gone: there’s no archive of the 24 October stream on his Twitch channel. Whether it was never saved or was taken down isn’t known.
  • EA is silent: EA and BioWare haven’t commented on the trailer, the stream or any of the other leaks.

What else has leaked

Toutain isn’t the only one talking. Here’s what else has come out this week, and how much weight it carries:

  • The trailer (real): Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier and IGN both confirmed the leaked trailer is genuine. It shows a new N7-coated lead, an older Liara, a biotic bar fight and what looks like a male Quarian squadmate.
  • Former cinematic supervisor Tony de Waal told TechRadar the cuts hit “50-ish” of the remaining staff, and that “we were making something special: a level of autonomy and choice that no other game has been able to match.”
  • YouTuber Dantics (unverified): he says he sat on BioWare’s community feedback council and claims the game was set around 600 years after the Reaper War. In his account, every ME3 ending is folded into canon by time and distance, and the galaxy is in a three-way Cold War between humanity’s bloc, the Council races and the geth. He describes an N7 agent pitched as “John Wick meets James Bond”, Hitman-style missions and romance. Kotaku couldn’t verify his involvement, but says a separate source told it the information is accurate. Treat it as a strong rumour, not fact.
  • Development stage: EA’s memo called it “early development”. Dantics claims it was much further along. That one’s unresolved.

Meanwhile, the #SaveMassEffect petition blew past 200,000 signatures on Monday and has raised its goal to 300,000. A Canadian politician has even suggested government funding to help ex-BioWare staff buy the studio back.

Our take

This is the bit that really stings. Mass Effect’s whole identity is that your choices matter, and the biggest gripe about Mass Effect 3 was that they didn’t, in the end. Universe was apparently built to fix exactly that: every save, every ending, every dead squadmate, stitched together by a system that could solve its own plot holes. That’s not a cash-grab sequel. That’s a studio trying to make good on a 15-year-old promise. And EA binned it to tidy up the books for its new owners.

Toutain’s probably right about one thing, too: EA doesn’t sell. It sat on Dead Space for a decade, buried Anthem and let Command & Conquer rot. The petition is lovely, the billboard is lovely, but if EA’s new owners are going to move, it’ll be because someone shows up with a cheque, not a hashtag. Until then, the best Mass Effect game BioWare ever designed lives in a two-minute leak and a subtitled Twitch clip. Brutal.

Would a timeline system that honours all your trilogy saves have got you back in? Tell us in the comments, or come mourn in the GetRekt Discord.
