Nvidia Is Reportedly Killing the RTX 5090. Your Next ‘Flagship’ Might Be a 24GB RTX 5080

Two reliable leakers say Nvidia is ending RTX 5090 production and sending every GB202 chip to its far pricier RTX PRO cards. Nvidia hasn't confirmed it, but with 5090s already selling for more than triple their launch price, it would explain a lot.

The fastest gaming graphics card on the planet might be about to stop being made. Two of the most reliable Nvidia leakers say RTX 5090 production is ending, with every future GB202 chip going to Nvidia’s workstation cards instead. Nvidia hasn’t confirmed it. But if you’ve seen what a 5090 costs lately, you won’t be shocked.

What the leakers are saying

On 10 October, MEGAsizeGPU posted a blunt one-liner: “All future GB202 supplies are RTX Pro exclusive.” GB202 is the giant Blackwell chip inside the RTX 5090. It also powers Nvidia’s RTX PRO 6000 and RTX PRO 5000 workstation cards, which sell for a lot more money.

Hours earlier, hongxing2020 posted what it says is a notice from a factory:

“We have received a notification from the factory: NVIDIA will no longer sell any RTX 5090 models, including the D variants. Going forward, the highest-end GeForce model will be the RTX 5080 24GB, and the RTX 5080 16GB version will be discontinued.”

That covers the regular RTX 5090 and the cut-down China-only 5090D models. VideoCardz calls both of them very reliable Nvidia leakers. One caveat: MEGAsizeGPU has only backed the 5090 part. The 24GB RTX 5080 comes from hongxing2020 alone.

What Nvidia says

Nothing yet. Nvidia hasn’t commented on the new reports or announced an end-of-production date. This isn’t the first time the 5090 has been declared dead, either. In November 2025, Nvidia told Wccftech that 5090 production was normal and the full RTX 50 lineup was available. In January, when Asus briefly said the RTX 5070 Ti was end-of-life before walking it back, Nvidia said: “Demand for GeForce RTX GPUs is strong, and memory supply is constrained. We continue to ship all GeForce SKUs and are working closely with our suppliers to maximize memory availability.”

Worth noting: “we continue to ship” is technically true if a handful of cards still go out the door.

Why it would make sense

  • Money. The same GB202 chip goes in a 32GB RTX 5090 or a 96GB RTX PRO 6000. One of those sells to gamers. The other sells to AI and workstation buyers for several times the price. Guess which one shareholders like.
  • Memory. GDDR7 is in short supply and getting pricier. In July, VideoCardz reported the RTX 50 SUPER cards had reached at least one board partner, only for Nvidia to put the launch on hold because 3GB GDDR7 modules cost so much.
  • The price says it already happened. The 5090 launched in January 2025 at US$1,999. In September, Wccftech found the cheapest one on Newegg at US$6,549.90, with some models over US$11,000. VideoCardz now puts typical prices at US$7,000 to US$9,600, and Hardwareluxx says European prices have passed €6,000. That’s not what a card in healthy production looks like.
  • AI demand. Wccftech has reported 5090s being bought in bulk, smuggled into China and rebuilt for AI work. Every 5090 that ends up in a server rack is one that never reaches a gamer.

So what’s an RTX 5080 24GB?

A 24GB RTX 5080 has been rumoured since before Blackwell even launched, and it’s widely expected to be what the RTX 5080 SUPER was meant to be. It would use the same 256-bit GB203 chip as today’s 5080, with denser 3GB memory modules taking it from 16GB to 24GB. Wccftech expects higher clocks and a power target around 415W. Nobody knows the price or the date yet.

It would be a nice upgrade on the current 5080. It would not be a 5090. The 5090 has roughly double the cores and a 512-bit memory bus, so if this happens, the top GeForce card gets a lot slower than the one it replaces.

What it means if you’re in NZ or Australia

  • Cards already made will keep selling. An end of production isn’t a recall. Board partners and retailers can keep selling the stock they have. There just won’t be more coming.
  • Don’t expect prices to drop. If supply really stops, the remaining 5090s get rarer, not cheaper. Local stock has been thin and well above launch prices all year.
  • If you already own one, congratulations. It may be the last GB202 gaming card for a long time.
  • If you were saving for one, a 24GB 5080 (if it’s real) or the current 5080 is probably where your money ends up.

Our take

Nvidia hasn’t said a word, and 5090 EOL rumours have come and gone before. But this time two separate, well-sourced leakers are saying the same thing on the same day, and the price of the card already looks like it’s been discontinued. Honestly, the 5090 stopped being a gaming product for most people the moment it cost more than a decent used car. Gamers were always going to lose a fight with AI money over the same chip.

If the 24GB 5080 lands at a sane price, that’s the real story for most of us. We’re not holding our breath. Anyone in the crew actually own a 5090? Come and gloat in the comments or on the Discord.
