Xbox posted a cosy autumn setup with Grand Theft Auto VI front and centre on a Series X dashboard. Three weeks out from launch, fans want to know if Microsoft already has its copy, and why Xbox is trying so hard.

Xbox posted an autumn setup photo with a Grand Theft Auto VI tile on a Series X dashboard, captioned "How our fall will be looking".
It passed 2.8 million views, with fans noting the tile has no "pre-ordered" label.
Microsoft hasn't said whether it has early code; the image proves nothing either way.
Sony owns GTA 6 marketing: "plays best on PS5", a PS5-captured launch trailer and about 65M views on its trailer post versus Xbox's 2.5M.
GTA 6 still launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on Thursday 19 November.
Xbox has worked out the cheat code for engagement: just show a picture of GTA 6. The official Xbox account posted a cosy autumn setup on Monday (US time) with the caption “How our fall will be looking”, and smack in the middle of the Series X dashboard, glowing like it’s already installed, is a Grand Theft Auto VI tile. More than 2.8 million views later, half the internet is asking the same thing: is Microsoft already playing it?
GTA 6 lands on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on Thursday 19 November, so we’re three weeks out. The timing is no accident, and neither is the platform war going on underneath it.
It’s a lifestyle shot, the kind brands churn out every season. A pumpkin, a pinecone, a translucent Xbox Elite controller and a Series X tucked beside the telly. The difference is what’s selected on screen.

Maybe, maybe not, and the image doesn’t prove it either way. Some outlets have pointed out that platform holders routinely get early copies of big multiplatform games for testing and certification weeks before launch. That’s plausible, but Microsoft hasn’t confirmed anything, and a marketing team can mock up a dashboard tile in about five minutes.
Plenty of the replies went straight for the jokes, with some suggesting Xbox might be the leaker. Either way, the post did exactly what it was meant to: get people talking about GTA 6 on Xbox instead of only on PlayStation.
Because Sony has been eating Xbox’s lunch on GTA 6 marketing. Back in July, a PlayStation Blog post co-written with Rockstar said the game “plays best on PS5”, and Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick had already referred to a marketing deal with Sony in May. The terms have never been made public.
Then Rockstar’s launch trailer dropped on 15 October, captured entirely on a PS5 and opening with that same “plays best on PS5” line. Not an Xbox logo in sight. Here it is if you somehow haven’t watched it ten times already:
According to TheGamer, Xbox didn’t share the trailer until a full week after PlayStation did, and its post had about 2.5 million views against roughly 65 million on PlayStation’s. PlayStation’s version got a custom Vice City outro; Xbox’s ended with the stock Series X|S logo and fanfare.

It hasn’t all been bad for Xbox on social. Its May post with the 19 November date and a “Wishlist Now” button pulled in about 37.3 million views, as Pure Xbox reported at the time. Lesson learned: people don’t need a trailer, they just need to see the words GTA 6.
There’s been other noise too. Earlier this month The Verge reported Microsoft was planning something “no other platform holder is doing” around GTA 6, which sources took to mean exclusive streaming rights. Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball shut that down, saying the game “will not be streaming exclusively or to PC”. Ball has also said Microsoft is “very happy” with pre-orders, and that Xbox’s share is in line with its roughly 23% slice of the console market, according to TheGamer.

Fair play to Xbox’s social team. When your rival has paid for the “plays best on” sticker, the official trailer and the custom outro, the only move left is cheek. A pumpkin, a controller and a GTA tile, and suddenly Xbox is the platform everyone’s talking about for a day.
But let’s not pretend 2.8 million views on a teaser photo is a win when PlayStation’s trailer post did more than twenty times that. It’s a bit sad, really. Xbox is selling the same game on the same day, probably running about as well on a Series X, and it’s reduced to posting autumn vibes and letting fans guess whether it’s got an early copy. If Microsoft does have one, say so. If it doesn’t, the tile is just bait. Either way, the GTA 6 marketing war has been a one-sided beating, and this post doesn’t change that.
